Precautions

This drug is used to treat psychotic symptoms related to cognitive disorders in elderly patients, but some clinical trials have reported higher mortality rates in patients taking this medication compared to those taking placebo. This medication should not be used in patients who are in a comatose state or have severely impaired circulatory function, who are strongly affected by central nervous system depressants, who are acutely intoxicated with alcohol, who are allergic to this drug or similar drugs, infants under 1 year of age, patients with Reye's syndrome, and those currently receiving epinephrine. Particular caution should be exercised in patients suspected of having complications from encephalitis, brain tumors, or head trauma, as well as patients with liver, kidney, blood disorders, cardiovascular diseases, skin conditions, severe respiratory diseases, a history of epilepsy or seizures, Parkinson's disease, glaucoma, elderly patients, those with depression, infants, and physically weak patients. This drug can cause various side effects such as hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias, changes in blood cell counts, gastrointestinal disorders, hepatic impairment, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, extrapyramidal symptoms, irreversible movement disorders, visual disturbances, endocrine abnormalities, psychiatric and neurological disorders, and hypersensitivity reactions; therefore, symptoms should be closely monitored during treatment. If taken for a long period, liver function and blood status should be regularly tested, and as drowsiness or decreased concentration may occur, driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. Additionally, abrupt cessation of this medication may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and insomnia, so it is important to taper the dosage gradually. Caution is required when taken with other central nervous system depressants, antihypertensives, anticholinergic medications, and alcohol due to the potential for increased interactions. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use this medication as it may harm the fetus, and breastfeeding women should discontinue nursing. Dosing adjustments and careful administration are necessary for children and elderly patients due to the higher risk of side effects. In case of overdose, symptoms such as central nervous system depression, hypotension, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, and respiratory depression may occur, and there is no specific antidote available, so appropriate symptomatic treatment should be provided. When handling this medication, avoid skin contact and wash hands and face frequently to prevent hypersensitivity reactions.
