Short-term treatment of insomnia
This medication is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It helps those who have difficulty falling asleep or who wake up frequently. It improves sleep quality to allow for adequate rest. The duration of medication use should be limited to minimize side effects, making it effective in restoring healthy sleep patterns.
This medication should be administered for a short period (usually 7-10 days), and the duration of treatment should not exceed a maximum of 2-3 weeks. To achieve the best effect and avoid serious adverse reactions, it is advisable to individualize the dose and use the minimum effective dose. Care should be taken not to increase the prescribed dose. If the dose must be increased because the patient does not respond to a low dose, dose-related adverse reactions may occur; therefore, administer cautiously while monitoring the patient closely. 1. Adults: Depending on the patient, administer 0.125 ~ 0.25 mg of triazolam orally at bedtime. Because adverse reactions increase in a dose-dependent manner, doses exceeding 0.25 mg are not recommended. 2. Elderly and debilitated patients: Administer an initial dose of 0.125 mg of triazolam. If the patient does not respond to a low dose, 0.25㎎ may be administered, but do not exceed 0.25 mg. 3. Discontinuation or dose reduction The risk of dependence may increase with the dose and duration of treatment. Therefore, use the lowest appropriate dose for the shortest possible period and regularly reassess the need for continued treatment. Abrupt discontinuation or rapid dose reduction after continued use of this medication may cause withdrawal reactions that can be life-threatening. To reduce the risk of withdrawal reactions, discontinue this medication or reduce the dose gradually (see “1. Warnings” under Precautions for Use). If withdrawal reactions occur, consider temporarily pausing the dose reduction or increasing the dose to the previous level. The dose should then be reduced more slowly.
This medication aids sleep and may impair full alertness after taking it, making it risky to drive or perform complex tasks, which the patient may not remember. Caution is advised when taking it with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants as it raises the risks of such behaviors. Rarely, this medication may cause serious allergic reactions, such as swelling of the tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing; in such cases, the patient should stop taking the medication immediately. Increased anxiety, strange behaviors, hallucinations, or memory loss may occur during treatment, and the patient should consult a doctor if such symptoms arise. This medication may cause drowsiness and dizziness, so avoid dangerous activities like driving or operating machinery, and combining with alcohol is hazardous. If stopped abruptly after long-term use, severe withdrawal symptoms may arise; thus, dosage should be tapered according to the doctor's instructions. Individuals with certain conditions, those who are pregnant, or children should not use this medication, and elderly patients should take it with caution at lower doses. Overdosage may lead to coma or difficulty breathing, so strict adherence to the prescribed dosage is necessary, and consulting with a physician is recommended. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform the physician of any ongoing medications, especially opioids, as caution is crucial in such cases. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored tightly in the original container.
