Additionally, it is not suitable for patients with oxalate nephropathy, recurrent calcium kidney stones, acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, severe cardiac conduction defects, angina, and hypotension. Patients with liver dysfunction or those at risk for seizures, pregnant women, or those who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should also avoid taking this medication. Neurological symptoms such as seizures, paresthesia, anxiety, drowsiness, headache, and dizziness might occur when taking this medication. Allergic reactions, such as urticaria or angioedema, have also been reported, along with symptoms of hepatitis or liver dysfunction. Kidney-related issues may lead to urination problems or kidney stones, while cardiovascular anomalies such as low blood pressure, arrhythmias, angina, syncope, and peripheral edema may occur. There may also be a risk of elevated blood sugar levels; therefore, individuals requiring blood sugar control should be cautious. This medication is not used for treating hypertension, and it is important to drink plenty of water to maintain urination due to the risk of kidney stones. Additionally, taking this medication without fluids at bedtime may cause esophagitis; hence, it should be taken with water. It is safest for pregnant or nursing women to avoid this medication, especially during breastfeeding as it may be transmitted through breast milk. In case of overdose, symptoms such as cardiac suppression or seizures may emerge, necessitating immediate medical treatment, which may include gastric lavage, activated charcoal administration, cardiac function monitoring, or sedatives in case of seizures.
