Improvement of gastric ulcers and gastric mucosal lesions, and relief of excessive stomach acid.
This drug is used to treat various gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also effective in preventing Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia and treating ulcers after surgery. It helps with gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used for the acute exacerbation of acute gastritis and chronic gastritis, as well as for gastric mucosal lesions related to upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Additionally, it is effective in relieving heartburn or regurgitation symptoms due to excessive stomach acid. Overall, this drug is used to improve symptoms related to various gastrointestinal disorders.
Adults should take 150 mg of ranitidine orally twice a day, in the morning and at bedtime. For gastric and duodenal ulcers, the dose is 150 mg twice a day or 300 mg once a day at bedtime. Duodenal ulcer patients may take 300 mg twice a day. For gastroesophageal reflux disease, the dosage is 150 mg twice a day or 300 mg once a day at bedtime for 8 weeks.
For children aged 8 to 18 years, the dose can be 150 mg (2 mg per kg of body weight) taken twice a day.
This drug should not be used by patients who have had an allergic reaction to any of the components. Patients with a rare disease called acute porphyria should avoid taking this medication as it may worsen their symptoms. Patients with poor kidney function need to adjust the dosage since the drug may not be properly excreted, leading to increased blood concentration. Patients with poor liver function should also take this drug with caution, and those with a history of drug allergies should use it carefully. Elderly patients may be more vulnerable to side effects of this drug, so they need to be particularly cautious. Regular examinations are necessary for those taking NSAIDs, especially elderly patients or those with gastrointestinal problems. This drug can mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or middle-aged patients with indigestion should confirm the presence of cancer before use. Patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori should also undergo therapy to eradicate the bacteria. This drug may rarely cause serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock, so it should be discontinued immediately if any abnormal symptoms appear. If allergic symptoms such as hives, rashes, or bronchospasm occur, stop taking the medication and consult a doctor. If symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, or fever appear, a blood test should be conducted and appropriate measures taken. If symptoms of liver dysfunction or jaundice appear, stop taking the drug immediately. Rarely, cardiac irregularities may occur such as bradycardia or tachycardia, so careful observation is required. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation, nausea, or abdominal pain may occur, and if symptoms worsen, consult a doctor. Neurological side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, or mental confusion have been rarely reported, so it is advisable to avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. Symptoms of muscle pain or joint pain may occur and should be closely monitored as they could be caused by this drug. Skin rashes or hair loss might occur but should be reported if changes in the skin appear. This drug should be used at the minimum effective dose while confirming therapeutic effects, and if it is ineffective, it is recommended to switch to other treatments. Elderly patients or those with chronic diseases taking this drug may have a higher risk of pneumonia, so caution is advised. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs after taking this medication, it is best to refrain from driving or performing hazardous tasks. There may be interactions with other medications, so inform your doctor, especially if you are taking anticoagulants or specific medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should only use this drug if its safety is established and only when necessary. Its safety in children has not been sufficiently established, so caution is advised. The elderly should monitor dosage and administration intervals due to potential increases in drug concentrations due to decreased kidney function. In cases of overdose, specific symptoms of toxicity are rare, but emergency measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary. The drug should be stored in a sealed container that blocks light and kept in a cool, dry place, as this helps maintain its effectiveness over time.
