This medication is effective for ulcers occurring in the stomach and duodenum, and symptoms of excessive gastric acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It can also be administered to patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease or to prevent Mendelson syndrome before surgery, and is used for ulcer treatment after surgery. It is also helpful for treating gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Additionally, it is effective in improving gastric mucosal lesions such as acute exacerbations of acute and chronic gastritis and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. As it is also used to alleviate symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux due to excessive stomach acid, it is a good medication for overall improvement in gastric health.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to its ingredients or a history of acute porphyria. In patients with impaired renal function, the concentration of this medication may increase, thus dose adjustment or modification of the administration interval is necessary. Patients with compromised liver function should also use this medication with caution. Patients with a history of drug allergies and the elderly should be administered cautiously, and if taken in conjunction with NSAIDs, gastrointestinal conditions should be monitored periodically. This medication can mask symptoms of gastric cancer; therefore, use it only after confirming that newly developed or changed dyspeptic symptoms in middle-aged or older patients are not due to malignancy. Patients with Helicobacter pylori-positive gastric or duodenal ulcers require eradication therapy. Rarely, severe allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may occur during the use of this medication; if unusual symptoms appear, discontinue use immediately and visit a hospital. If hypersensitivity reactions appear such as urticaria, rash, difficulty breathing, or hypotension, medication should be stopped. Blood tests may show a decrease in white blood cells or platelets; if symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, or fever occur, consult a physician. If symptoms of liver dysfunction or jaundice appear, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a healthcare professional. Rarely, symptoms such as arrhythmias, vasculitis, constipation, nausea, or abdominal pain may occur, so caution is necessary. Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, headache, confusion, or hallucinations may occur, particularly in patients with reduced renal function who should be especially cautious. Rarely, symptoms such as gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction, myalgia, skin rash, and alopecia may manifest. Long-term use of this medication may lead to increased bacterial growth in the stomach due to decreased gastric acid secretion, so it should be used according to the instructions of the physician. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should consult a physician before taking this medication. Safety in children has not been adequately established; therefore, administration to children should be done cautiously. Elderly patients may require dose adjustment due to the potential for increased drug concentrations caused by reduced renal function. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform the physician or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs after taking this medication, avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. In case of overdose, appropriate treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage is necessary, and in some cases, blood dialysis may be performed. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided.
