Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with inflammatory bowel disease or gastrointestinal obstruction, perforation of the digestive tract, or those at risk for these conditions. Patients with unexplained abdominal pain or those on a galactose-free diet, as well as patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or any of its components, should also avoid this medication. Additionally, caution is necessary for patients with lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption due to the presence of lactose. For diabetic patients, the amount of sugar in this drug should be considered for careful administration, and attention is needed for patients with fructose intolerance or fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Patients with acute gastritis, infants and young children, and the elderly should also be administered with caution. Initially, abdominal bloating may occur but typically resolves within a few days. In cases of overdose, abdominal pain and diarrhea may appear, requiring dosage adjustment, and prolonged high doses may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Long-term or excessive administration may result in dependence of bowel reflexes on the medication, requiring careful consideration. During treatment of portal-systemic encephalopathy, other laxatives should not be used simultaneously, and caution is required for patients with hepatic diseases accompanied by electrolyte disorders. If loose stools or diarrhea develop, the dosage should be reduced or administration should be discontinued. When patients taking this medication undergo a rectal examination or colonoscopy, thorough bowel cleansing is required to prevent the risk of gas explosion due to hydrogen gas in the intestines. If unexplained abdominal pain occurs or symptoms do not improve after administration, it is essential to consult a physician. This drug may interact with other medications, so caution is necessary when used with acarbose, broad-spectrum antibiotics, diuretics, corticosteroids, amphotericin B, cardiac glycosides, and antacids. It is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Elderly patients may have decreased physiological functions, so it is advisable to start with small doses while monitoring their condition, and regular serum electrolyte testing is recommended for long-term use. In children, there is a potential risk of dental caries with long-term administration, so dental hygiene should be prioritized, and it should only be administered when absolutely necessary due to the possibility of inhibiting bowel reflexes. In cases of overdose, diarrhea and abdominal pain may occur, and when this leads to fluid loss, dosage should be reduced or discontinued, and appropriate treatment such as electrolyte replenishment should be undertaken.
