Epilepsy (e.g., partial seizures and status epilepticus); suppression of digitalis-induced arrhythmias
This medication is primarily used to treat generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal), partial seizures (focal seizures), and psychomotor seizures in patients with epilepsy. It is also effectively used as an injectable for status epilepticus and in cases where oral administration fails to suppress seizures, particularly when there is altered consciousness or during/post-surgery. Additionally, it aids in treatment when first-line therapy for digoxin-induced ventricular arrhythmias is ineffective. This medication is widely used for various forms of epileptic seizures and specific arrhythmias.
The dose should be adjusted according to the severity of seizures and the patient's tolerability; measure the blood concentration if necessary. This drug must not be administered once daily and must be given in divided doses. Adults: Administer 100 mg of phenytoin orally 3 times daily; the maintenance dose is 300 ~ 400 mg of this drug in divided doses. The daily dose may be increased to 600 mg of this drug. Adults: Slowly administer 125 ~ 250 mg of phenytoin sodium by intravenous injection at a rate not exceeding 50 mg/min. If seizures are not controlled with this dose, administer an additional 100 ~ 150 mg of this drug after 30 minutes or consider other treatment. When convulsions have stopped and consciousness has returned following administration of this drug, switch to oral administration. Adults: As the initial dose, administer 3.5 ~ 5 mg of phenytoin sodium per kg of body weight by intravenous injection. Repeat once if necessary. This drug must be administered slowly by intravenous injection at a steady rate not exceeding 50 mg/min. Adjust the dose appropriately according to age and symptoms.
Administer 5 mg of phenytoin per kg of body weight in 2 ~ 3 divided doses; the maintenance dose is 4 ~ 8 mg of this drug per kg of body weight per day in divided doses. Up to 300 mg of this drug may be administered daily.
