Even if the lithium concentration in the blood is within the therapeutic range, toxicity may occur, so facilities that can accurately and quickly measure blood lithium levels are necessary during treatment. While taking this medication, changes in the electrocardiogram related to Brugada syndrome, a heart problem, may occur, so it should be used cautiously after consulting a specialist if there is suspicion of heart disease. This medication should not be used in patients with organic brain disorders or EEG abnormalities, cardiovascular disease, reduced kidney function, symptoms like dehydration, fever, or diarrhea, patients with restricted sodium intake, those taking certain diuretics or serotonin-related medications, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and patients with Addison's disease. Patients with a history of heart disease or poor kidney function, those with inadequate fluid intake, the elderly, patients with liver dysfunction, and those with thyroid abnormalities should use this medication with extra caution, closely monitoring blood lithium levels and symptoms. This medication can cause various side effects and signs of toxicity, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, speech disturbances, confusion, and seizures, so if these symptoms appear, you should consult a doctor immediately. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur during treatment, making it safer to avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. Regularly checking blood lithium levels is necessary to reduce the risk of overdose, and if serum levels exceed a certain threshold, it may be necessary to adjust or stop the medication dose. When used in combination with other psychiatric drugs, symptoms of toxicity may worsen, so caution is needed when taking them together. Interactions may occur when taken with thiazide diuretics, carbamazepine, haloperidol, ACE inhibitors, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, certain antidepressants, and you must inform your doctor of any medications you are taking. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and if breastfeeding, they should avoid taking it or discontinue breastfeeding if possible. Safety in children has not been established, so it should only be used carefully when absolutely necessary. Elderly patients may experience higher blood lithium levels due to decreased kidney function, so administration should be closely monitored.
