Treatment of hypocalcemia (such as tetany) and alleviation of magnesium toxicity
This medication is used to treat tetany and related symptoms due to hypocalcemia. It also helps in the treatment of magnesium toxicity. Therefore, it is effective in improving muscle spasms caused by hypocalcemia or problems due to abnormal magnesium levels.
Calcium Chloride Hydrate is administered as 0.4 to 1g once daily, very slowly (as calcium 0.68 to 1.36 mEq/min) via intravenous injection. Adjust dosage appropriately based on age and symptoms.
When using glass ampoules, care must be taken to avoid glass fragments, so they should be cut cleanly and safely. Extra caution is needed when administering to children and the elderly. When using this drug as an intravenous injection, do not administer it simultaneously with the antibiotic ceftriaxone, as it may form a precipitate. If continuous infusion is necessary, the infusion line must be cleaned thoroughly. Patients taking cardiac glycosides, those with a history of hypercalcemia or kidney stones, sarcoidosis or kidney disease, patients with hypoproteinemia, those with heart failure, and patients allergic to this medication should not receive it. Additionally, this medication should not be combined with ceftriaxone in newborns, and should be used with caution in patients taking active vitamin D preparations or with hyperthyroid conditions. Common gastrointestinal side effects such as decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach pain, as well as cardiovascular symptoms such as low blood pressure and irregular heartbeats may occur during the use of this medication. In case of overdose, muscle relaxation, weight loss, muscle pain, and edema may occur, hence caution is advised. When used over a long period or in children, calcium levels in the blood and urine should be monitored regularly, and if hypercalcemia occurs, administration should be stopped immediately. This medication may interact with cardiac glycosides, muscle relaxants, tetracyclines, uterotonics, and anti-aldosterone agents, so it should not be taken together or should be used cautiously. It should be used during pregnancy only if absolutely necessary, and elderly patients should be administered carefully due to lowered physical functions. This medication is for intravenous use only, and care must be taken to avoid extravasation during injection. Extra caution is required when administering to newborns or infants. If the infusion rate is too fast, symptoms of cardiac syncope may occur, so it should be administered slowly, and it should not be mixed with various chemicals as it may cause precipitation. Before injection, the solution should be warmed to body temperature, used immediately after opening, and any remaining solution should be discarded. Finally, this medication should be stored in a secure place out of reach of children.
