This medicine helps relieve bronchial asthma attacks and alleviates symptoms of serum sickness, hives, angioneurotic edema, etc. It is also used as adjunctive therapy in cases of shock or cardiac arrest, and it plays a role in prolonging the effect of local anesthetics. Overall, it is effectively used in various allergic reactions and emergency situations.

How it is given

Adult administration

As a 0.1% injection solution, 0.2-1.0 mL is administered subcutaneously and intramuscularly at one time. In cases of emergency such as cardiac arrest, it should be diluted within a range not exceeding 0.25 mL with normal saline injection and administered slowly intravenously. Add 1-2 drops of this medication to 10 mL of local anesthetic for use.

Precautions

This medication should be used cautiously as there is a risk of glass fragments may enter when opening the ampoule, and extra care should be taken especially when used in children and the elderly. This medication has a vasoconstrictive effect, so it should not be administered to patients with certain conditions such as atherosclerosis, heart disease, and hypertension. Pallor, chest tightness, prodromal symptoms of hypersensitivity (itching, urticaria, swelling of lips and oral cavity, diaphoresis, hypotension), cardiac arrest, ventricular fibrillation, rapid elevation of blood pressure, cerebrovascular hemorrhage due to severe hypertension, pulmonary edema, breathing difficulties, ventricular rhythm disturbances, cardiac arrhythmias, ventricular fibrillation, pulmonary edema, cerebrovascular hemorrhage, renal function failure, ventricular fibrillation, severe edema or urination abnormalities, severe neurological symptoms (possible headache, dizziness, confusion of consciousness).

Mild side effects

Palpitations, myocardial ischemia, stress-induced cardiomyopathy, chest pain, tachycardia, arrhythmias, flushing, elevated blood pressure, headache, dizziness, anxiety, tremors, memory impairment, psychomotor agitation, nausea, vomiting, pigmentation with ophthalmic and subconjunctival injection, conjunctival hyperemia, ocular pain, corneal pigmentation with prolonged use, local injection site necrosis, peripheral ischemia, heat sensation, sweating, cold extremities, hypersensitivity, hyperglycemia, gastrointestinal and renal/myocardial necrosis.

Storage

This medication is sensitive to light, so it should be stored in a sealed container that does not allow light in. Additionally, the storage temperature should be kept below 25 degrees Celsius, and it should not be stored in a refrigerator to avoid chilling.
