This medication is used to treat hypertension and malignant hypertension, as well as heart edema due to congestive heart failure, renal and hepatic edema, and edema caused by premenstrual syndrome or corticosteroids, phenylbutazone, and estrogen. It is effective in improving various types of edema and blood pressure-related issues.

How to take

Adult dose

1. Edema: Administer orally 25-100 mg of hydrochlorothiazide once daily for 1-2 doses. 2. Hypertension: Administer 25-50 mg once daily, divided into 1-2 doses. 3. Premenstrual syndrome: Administer 25-50 mg once daily for 1-2 doses. Adjust according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with severe liver dysfunction or severely impaired kidney function. Additionally, patients with anuria (no urine output) or significantly low blood sodium and potassium levels should not take this medication. Patients allergic to sulfonamide drugs or those with Addison's disease or hypercalcemia should also avoid this medication. Individuals with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should refrain from using this medication due to the lactose it contains. Patients who take this medication for a prolonged period or have liver function problems must be closely monitored, as patients with advanced cirrhosis may experience severe brain dysfunction and should use it cautiously. Patients with severe cardiovascular disease should be cautious, as rapid diuretic effects may lead to blood concentration and an increased risk of thrombosis. This medication may increase the risk of skin cancer; therefore, sun exposure should be limited, and any changes in the skin should be promptly discussed with a physician. Patients are advised to periodically check for electrolyte imbalances, changes in blood glucose, and uric acid levels while taking this medication, and dosage adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary if any abnormal symptoms arise. Symptoms such as dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so it is advisable to avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. If acute eye pain or decreased vision occurs, discontinue use immediately and inform healthcare professionals. Rarely, respiratory issues such as pneumonia or pulmonary edema may arise; thus, prompt treatment should be sought if breathing difficulties occur. This medication may interact with several other drugs; hence, if taking other medications, it is essential to inform a doctor or pharmacist. In late pregnancy, administration should be cautious considering the impact on the fetus and mother, and during breastfeeding, it should be avoided as it may interfere with milk production. Infants and the elderly have a higher risk of electrolyte imbalance and require special caution, and the elderly should start with a low dose while monitoring their condition closely. Lastly, to avoid nocturia, it is recommended to take this medication in the morning.
