This medication is used to replenish fluids needed during dehydration, particularly when the body lacks water. It is also utilized for diluting or dissolving injectable drugs. Therefore, it helps improve symptoms caused by dehydration and assists in the proper administration of injectable medications.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 500 to 1000 mL intravenously. The intravenous infusion rate should be no more than 0.5 g/kg per hour as dextrose. Use an appropriate amount for dissolving or diluting the injectable solution. Adjust appropriately according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

Caution should be taken when cutting the ampule as glass fragments may mix in, especially in children or the elderly. Administering this medication intravenously, which contains dextrose, may increase the consumption of vitamin B1 in the body, leading to a severe deficiency state, so caution is advised. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain conditions such as persistent dehydration, fluid overload, hyperglycemia, acidosis, hypokalemia, hyperosmolar coma, or intolerance to carbohydrates. Additionally, it is also safer not to administer this medication to patients with spinal or intracranial hemorrhage or those suffering from delirium tremens. Patients with a tendency for potassium, phosphorus, or magnesium deficiency, or with hyponatremia, diabetes insipidus, renal failure, heart failure, severe malnutrition, thiamine deficiency, sepsis, or critical trauma should be administered this drug with caution. Administering this medication in large quantities or at a rapid rate may cause serious side effects such as electrolyte imbalance or fluid overload leading to pulmonary edema or congestion; thus, caution is necessary. In patients with difficulty controlling blood sugar, hyperglycemia or renal losses may occur, and blood sugar and electrolyte levels should be monitored frequently. Long-term use may affect insulin secretion, so if necessary, it is advisable to administer insulin concurrently. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been established; it should be used only when absolutely necessary, considering potential risks to the fetus. During labor, careful observation of the glucose levels in both the mother and the newborn is required. Newborns, especially preterm or low birth weight infants, are vulnerable to fluctuations in blood sugar, so blood sugar should be monitored closely; hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia can lead to severe health issues. Elderly patients may have reduced bodily functions, so this medication should be administered with increased caution. Overdose may lead to hyperglycemia or symptoms of diabetes, and insulin treatment may be required in such cases. This medication is not advisable for subcutaneous injection; it should be used immediately after opening, and any remaining solution should be discarded. Pay attention to infection prevention during administration, and especially in cold weather, it is safer to warm it to body temperature before use. When mixing with other medications, consider chemical and physical reactions thoroughly and use immediately, taking care not to administer simultaneously with blood. It is also crucial to avoid connecting containers continuously to reduce the risk of air embolism.
