Are morning people smarter? "People who sleep late have better cognitive function"
Oh... haha, is it really?
Am I sleeping too late even though I'm still awake? Haha
Most people go to bed early when they have an important exam or presentation the next day. Sufficient sleep is necessary to maintain optimal condition, and to achieve that, one must go to bed early. However, research has shown that nocturnal individuals like Barack Obama and Winston Churchill may be smarter than morning people.
According to a study published in the British Medical Journal Public Health (BMJ Public Health), people who are most active and alert at night tend to perform better on cognitive tests.
Researchers at Imperial College London examined data from 27,000 participants in the UK Biobank study to investigate the relationship between sleep duration, quality, and chronotype. Participants were classified as 'morning types' or 'night types,' and those who did not fit into either category were classified as 'intermediate types.' The participants underwent tests assessing intelligence, reasoning ability, reaction time, and memory.
The study results showed that participants who slept 7 to 9 hours every night achieved the best scores on tests. Additionally, participants classified as 'night-type' and 'intermediate-type' demonstrated superior cognitive functions. The researchers stated, "People naturally more active at night, classified as 'night-type,' tended to perform better on cognitive tests than 'morning-type' individuals," and added, "these chronotype categories may influence cognitive function beyond mere personal preference."
According to the British media 'Daily Mail,' one of the famous night owls is former U.S. President Barack Obama, who reportedly went to bed well past midnight and woke up at 7 a.m. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill also went to bed at 4 a.m. and woke up too late, holding a war cabinet meeting in the bathtub.
Conversely, early risers who go to bed early and wake up early, known as "morning types," include Apple's Tim Cook and Michelle Obama. Cook goes to bed around 9:30 PM and wakes up at 3:45 AM, while Michelle Obama, unlike her husband, wakes up at 4:30 AM and goes to bed by 10 PM. Being a "morning type" appears to be common among entrepreneurs and CEOs, and according to surveys, most (37%) wake up at 6 AM.
