Everything about 'UV rays' that cannot be avoided even during the rainy season

What are the beneficial effects of ultraviolet rays?

Ultraviolet rays promote the production of important vitamin D for human health. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from food and promotes bone development. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exposure to sunlight for 5 to 15 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week. Additionally, artificial ultraviolet light is used to treat certain diseases (such as rickets, psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, lupus, etc.) that do not respond to other treatments.

What is the effect of ultraviolet rays on the skin?

Excessive short-term exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause sunburn, tanning, and sun allergy. Prolonged exposure can lead to degenerative changes in skin cells, connective tissue, and blood vessels, resulting in premature aging and skin cancer (non-melanoma skin cancer and malignant melanoma).

What is the effect of ultraviolet rays on the eyes?

Acute effects of UV exposure include photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis, which are very painful but reversible. Chronic exposure can lead to cataracts, pterygium, and cancers of the eye and surrounding areas (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma). Additionally, UV exposure is associated with the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The effect of ultraviolet rays on the immune system

Ultraviolet exposure can alter the activity and distribution of certain cells that trigger the human immune response. As a result, the risk of infection may increase or the body's defense against skin cancer may decrease. Ultraviolet exposure also increases the occurrence of cold sores.

Effects of UV rays according to skin color

People with darker skin tones are generally at lower risk of developing melanoma or non-melanoma skin cancers, but regardless of skin color, there is still a risk of eye damage and immune system effects. Therefore, everyone should be cautious about sun exposure. Ultraviolet rays play an important role in health, but excessive exposure without proper protection can lead to serious health problems. Prevention and appropriate protection are necessary.

자외선이 무조건 나쁜건 아니지요. 과하지 않는다면  무엇이든지 일장일단이 있는듯 해요.
