Whether you're so tired you can't fall asleep at night, or you wake up frequently afterward, or you feel like you haven't slept at all, insomnia is a major culprit that disrupts your daily life. Recurring insomnia can significantly impair concentration and judgment, and even lead to various health problems, including a weakened immune system.

If you are suffering from insomnia and are considering taking over-the-counter medication, let's first find out what medications are available.

 

◇Antihistamines exploit the side effects of allergy medications

 

All insomnia medications available over-the-counter are over-the-counter. First-generation antihistamines are representative examples. Antihistamines block histamine, a substance that triggers allergic reactions like runny nose, hives, and itchy skin. When antihistamines cross the blood-brain barrier and block H1 receptors in the cerebral cortex, they cause side effects like sedation and drowsiness. First-generation antihistamine insomnia treatments capitalize on this.

Among the first-generation antihistamines used to treat insomnia, the active ingredient is one with a strong drowsiness effect. First-generation antihistamines, diphenhydramine and doxylamine, are used as sleeping pills. Diphenhydramine is used for temporary relief of insomnia, while doxylamine is used as an adjunctive treatment and sedative.

There are also insomnia treatments made from herbal medicine. Representative preparations commonly used in herbal insomnia treatments include: There is a long root . Valerian root is the root of the valerian plant and is known to inhibit the breakdown of GABA or GABA metabolites, which reduce brain activity, or to act on GABA receptors to suppress excitement and have a sedative effect.

 

It is used to treat insomnia caused by nervousness, agitation, and anxiety. Because it requires continuous use for several days to several weeks to take effect, it is not effective for acute insomnia. After prolonged use, the dosage should be gradually reduced.

 

Another herbal remedy is hops. Hops, the female flowers of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus), the raw ingredient in beer, produce methylbutanol, a sedative-hypnotic agent, and increase GABA activity, making it useful for treating insomnia caused by nervousness or excitement. It is also used in combination with valerian root to induce sleep and improve sleep quality.

 

◇Alcohol and medication are prohibited… Also not recommended for patients with glaucoma or benign prostatic hyperplasia.

 

There are several things to keep in mind when taking insomnia medications classified as over-the-counter. The first is abstaining from alcohol. Antihistamines, valerian, and hops, which have central nervous system depressant effects, and alcohol can enhance the effects of sleep aids and cause adverse reactions. Avoid taking medications and alcohol together.

 

Additionally, patients with glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or breathing difficulties should avoid taking insomnia medications. Antihistamines can cause anticholinergic side effects like dry mouth, difficulty urinating, and constipation, as well as palpitations, dizziness, headaches, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and blurred vision. Those taking cold or allergy medications should also be cautious. Antihistamines can cause side effects when taken with cold medications, allergy rhinitis medications, or motion sickness medications.

 

Meanwhile, over-the-counter insomnia medications are used to induce sleep and improve sleep quality for temporary, short-term insomnia. If insomnia persists for more than three weeks, seek medical attention for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment rather than relying on over-the-counter medications.

    전 불명증으로 고생해본 적은 없는 거 같습니다. 참 다행이죠. 하지만 그것 때문에 고상하시는 분들 보면 너무 힘드실 거 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 길초근이라는 것도 생소한 거지만 효과가 좋다니 연구해봐야겠어요.

     모르겠지만  꿀잠만큼 보약도 없는것 같아요
