Is teeth whitening necessarily for cosmetic purposes?

My child's teeth are a bit yellow.

I'm not exactly white myself, but since the child is already seeing things like this, I wonder if there's some innate trait.

But is whitening teeth only for cosmetic purposes?

I'm wondering if there's anything like whitening that would be better because yellowing isn't good somewhere.
