How is a CT scan before an implant different from an X-ray?

I was told about CT scans during my dental consultation. What is the difference between a CT scan and a regular X-ray?

I was hesitant because it involves extra costs, but I can't skip it for the treatment.

I would like to know at least what part is intended to be examined in detail. What is the difference between the two?
