What is the reason for wearing a retainer for a long time even after orthodontic treatment is finished?

I thought it would be over right after the orthodontic treatment was finished, but
I noticed that there are more people who wear their retainers for a longer time than I thought.

I was surprised to see quite a few posts saying they have been experiencing this every night for several years.
