[Pain] Calf cramp pain: I suffered from cramps in my calf while sleeping, and my leg became swollen.🦵

I used to suffer greatly from calf cramp pain while sleeping. (Now, I feel much better and no longer experience cramp pain while sleeping.) I do simple exercises such as walking and climbing stairs, and at home, I mainly work while sitting. I didn't massage my legs well after exercising, and perhaps because I sit for long periods while working, my legs would swell both day and night. At night, I would be startled by calf cramp pain and would hit and massage my calves relentlessly before sleeping. (;TДT)

So, I would like to introduce the methods I am intermittently using, hoping they will be helpful to you.

 

Why do you get calf cramps while sleeping?

 

Mineral deficiency

When minerals such as calcium or magnesium become deficient in the body, an electrolyte imbalance can occur, leading to pain.

It can also occur due to excessive caffeine intake, irritable bladder, diarrhea, or excessive sweating.

So these days, I am trying to reduce my caffeine intake and drink decaffeinated coffee when I do have coffee. Since tea also contains caffeine, I am trying not to drink it excessively.

 

Muscle tension

Pain may occur if you overuse or accumulate fatigue more than usual, and sudden exercise without warm-up can also cause pain.

Honestly, I don't think I do proper warm-up exercises and just walk.

On days when I walk a lot, I inevitably experience calf cramps (ToT). So, before exercising, I always make sure to do a quick warm-up!!

 

🔸️Impaired blood circulation

Even people who sit for long periods in the same position can experience pain. Blood flow in the legs cannot flow toward the heart, making smooth circulation difficult.

Pain can also occur even when muscle strength is insufficient.

👌I tend to sit and work for a long time.

So, I think the cramps and pain in my calves are due to poor blood circulation, so I frequently get up and do stretching.

 

Prevention of calf cramp pain!

🔸️Stretching

It is good to do enough stretching before and after exercising.

Stretching helps not only with muscles but also with improving blood circulation.

 

Balanced diet

Reduce caffeinated beverages and drink plenty of water to ensure proper hydration.

Maintain a balanced diet to prevent deficiencies of calcium, magnesium, and various electrolytes.

 

Compression stockings

It helps by applying compression to the legs to facilitate smooth blood flow toward the heart.

I wear it at home because it is said to help relieve pain just by wearing it.

It may be helpful for those experiencing calf pain due to circulation issues or for those who lack time to manage it.

💥 How to relieve calf cramp pain!

 

Ankle stretching

Helps to relax muscles and alleviate cramps.

Hold the ankle of the leg with the pain and gently pull it toward the chest as much as possible.

At this time, straighten your knee and pull your toes toward your body. Hold for more than 10 seconds until you feel the calf cramp relief.

 

Calf massage

Massaging your calves can help relax the muscles and improve blood circulation.

Massage by drawing circles with your palm or fingers.

 

Hot compress

Applying a warm compress helps relax muscles and alleviate pain. Soak a towel in warm water and place it on your calf for about 10 to 15 minutes.
