In a gathering of women in their 50s and 60s, someone said, "I can handle strong drinks, pour me another." They also expressed confidence that a few shots of soju wouldn't be a problem. It seemed they usually enjoyed drinking. If it were my family, I would immediately advise against such foolish behavior. Nowadays, even men are saying less about being able to handle alcohol. Middle-aged men tend to drink less, mainly for health reasons. Let's revisit the topic of alcohol and health from a cautionary perspective.

Generally, the risk of cancer development is more influenced by the amount of alcohol consumed than by the type of alcohol. No matter how good the alcohol is, drinking a lot of it is harmful to the body.

World Health Organization (WHO), our Ministry of Health and Welfare... all say "Don't drink alcohol."

To conclude, alcohol is a carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO), classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is a substance that definitely causes cancer. Group 1 also includes fine dust and the HIV virus, which causes AIDS. South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare has included in its cancer prevention guidelines the recommendation to avoid even small amounts of alcohol, such as one or two drinks per day, to prevent cancer. This is a warning to not even drink one glass a day for health reasons. The idea that moderate drinking is beneficial is now being dismissed.

"Even drinking one glass a day increases the risk of breast cancer"... What are the other causes?

The Korea National Cancer Information Center (National Cancer Center) emphasizes that alcohol consumption is a "very important risk factor" for the development of breast cancer. Even drinking one glass a day increases the risk of developing breast cancer. For every 10g increase in ethanol intake, the risk of breast cancer rises by 9-11%. According to the national cancer registration statistics released in December last year, the number of breast cancer patients approached 30,000 (29,528). It is the most common cancer among women. The causes of breast cancer are diverse, including genetics, hormonal changes, middle age, childbirth and breastfeeding, dietary habits, and obesity, but the impact of alcohol consumption is increasingly significant.

Why is frequent drinking in middle-aged women more dangerous due to overlapping hormonal changes?

Women have a lower alcohol metabolism ability compared to men. It is the rate at which the body breaks down and excretes alcohol. In particular, alcohol directly affects hormone levels, which can increase the risk of cancer. Cancer cells utilize female hormones (estrogen) to proliferate, which is breast cancer. Looking at the ages of breast cancer patients in Korea, the highest percentage is in their 50s at 29.8%, followed by those in their 60s at 21.6%. Even as menopause ends, there is no reason to be completely reassured. Women in their 40s account for 29.0%. Alcohol is also a cause of colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, and liver cancer, in addition to breast cancer. Middle-aged women, due to decreased alcohol metabolism ability and hormonal changes, may find drinking even more risky.

People not wearing masks despite the hazy sky caused by fine dust... What about alcohol?

Even though fine dust, a Group 1 carcinogen similar to alcohol, is rampant, there are still too many people walking around without masks and maintaining distance. Recently, the increase in non-smoker lung cancer is also influenced by such lifestyle habits. Lung cancer affects over 10,000 women each year. Among them, 90% have never smoked in their lives. Small lifestyle habits determine health and longevity. The same applies to alcohol. Late detection of cancer costs a lot of money. For example, new non-reimbursed (not covered by health insurance) drugs can cost over 100 million won annually. For the sake of family, I must protect my own body.
