Everyone envies being tall. Some even go so far as to give their children expensive growth hormone injections to help them grow taller. However, being tall has its downsides. One of them is vulnerability to heart disease or cancer.
The taller you are, the greater the risk of strain on your heart.
This is because it is difficult to send blood to every part of the body.
A research team at the U.S. Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Colorado analyzed the correlation between genetic data and height measurements of 323,793 U.S. adults and found that taller individuals had a higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation than shorter ones. This was true even for those without a history of chronic heart disease. Atrial fibrillation is a condition in which the heart does not beat regularly and can lead to serious illnesses such as stroke. Major symptoms include palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and dizziness. For individuals taller than 5 feet 7 inches (approximately 170 cm), the risk of developing atrial fibrillation increased by 3% for every inch (approximately 0.3 cm) of height gained.
The taller you are, the greater the risk of developing cancer. This is because the greater the number of cells, the higher the likelihood of mutated cancer cells developing. A research team at the University of Regensburg in Germany tracked 340,152 adults for approximately 15.3 years using data from the European Cancer Nutrition Study, and found that the taller a person was, the greater the risk of developing cancer, even if they were not obese.
Tall people had a 3% higher overall risk of developing cancer than short people with abdominal obesity.
Tall men, in particular, should be wary of pneumothorax and varicocele. Pneumothorax is a condition in which a hole forms in the lung, causing air to leak and accumulate in the pleural cavity. It occurs about six times more frequently in men than in women to begin with, but tall and thin men are even more susceptible.
This is because a lack of fat reduces the body's lubricating fluid, causing the lungs to frequently rub against surrounding tissues. Varicocele is a condition in which blood circulation is impaired due to damage to the valves in the scrotal veins.
It also commonly appears in tall, thin men. If left untreated, it can lead to male infertility, so it is advisable to visit a hospital if you can feel bumpy blood vessels in your testicles.
