To maintain health, it's best to reduce the intake of processed foods such as ice cream and carbonated drinks.
Actress Lee Seung-yeon (56) revealed her past experience of excessively gaining weight and maintaining unhealthy eating habits that led her to seek medical treatment.
On the 8th, during the broadcast of tvN's 'Your Body's Sounds', MC Lee Seung-yeon shared her dieting experience. Lee Seung-yeon said, "Because of my job, dieting is like a destiny I can't avoid," and "After having a child, I gained 30kg, and I drank orange juice with fructose every day." She added, "(Later) I did rigorous exercise, about 1,000 strength exercises daily, but instead of healthy food, I was busy replenishing my energy with chocolate cones (a type of chocolate ice cream)." She continued, "It was a diet that involved borrowing money from the financial sector and even taking out personal loans," and "At some point, my body swelled up, and I ended up going to the hospital." The commercially available orange juice and chocolate cones that Lee Seung-yeon frequently consumed both contain large amounts of liquid fructose, so caution is advised.
High-fructose corn syrup is a substance made by artificially adding fructose to corn starch. It is cheaper than sugar and is used as a sugar substitute in various processed foods. Typical examples include cola, canned coffee, ice cream, ketchup, candies, and jam. The main components of high-fructose corn syrup are fructose and glucose. Fruits contain both fructose and dietary fiber, which slow down the absorption of fructose; however, high-fructose corn syrup lacks dietary fiber, leading to much faster absorption than natural fructose and raising blood sugar levels. Even in the same amount, high-fructose corn syrup is absorbed into the body more quickly than sugar. While sugar is composed of combined fructose and glucose, high-fructose corn syrup has these two separated.
It has been reported that some beverages labeled as '100% fruit juice' among commercially available juices contain more liquid fructose than carbonated soft drinks. Additionally, juices sold at fresh fruit juice specialty stores, which are not processed beverages, have been found to exceed or be more than twice the World Health Organization (WHO) daily sugar intake recommendations, causing controversy. The high sugar content in fresh fruit juices made by blending fruit and ice is due to the addition of sugar, liquid fructose, syrups, and other sweeteners to the juice.
Liquid fructose is also found in ice creams, including chocolate cones. It increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. Additionally, it binds to blood protein components to produce advanced glycation end products, which can create inflammatory substances in the blood and potentially lead to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Synthetic coloring agents commonly found in ice cream are the pinnacle of additive mixtures that include artificial flavorings, sugar, and dyes. Synthetic colorings can be harmful to health; for example, 'tar-based dyes' are known to affect atopic dermatitis, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma, and excessive intake may cause cancer.
Therefore, not only for dieting but also for health, it is better to reduce the intake of processed foods such as ice cream and carbonated drinks. Even if you want to control your liquid fructose intake, many products do not specify the content, and if you already enjoy processed foods, you may unknowingly consume more than the appropriate amount of liquid fructose through various foods. When purchasing products, you should check whether they contain liquid fructose by looking for labels such as 'liquid fructose,' 'high-fructose corn syrup,' or 'corn syrup.'
