Unintentional habits in daily life can cause indigestion. People with weak stomachs or esophagus should be especially careful. Let's learn about habits that cause indigestion and how to improve them.

◇If you have a weak stomach, eat rice and ginger rather than cabbage.

People with poor stomach health often experience bloating and heartburn. Cabbage is known for its high fiber content, which helps relieve constipation and is beneficial for the body. However, those with weak stomachs may experience indigestion when consuming high-fiber foods. Because fiber is not broken down in the stomach, it is fermented and digested by intestinal bacteria. This process produces methane gas and other gases, which can lead to bloating.

On the other hand, rice and ginger help relieve indigestion symptoms. Rice is fully digested and absorbed in the small intestine, producing less gas, such as methane. Ginger helps reduce postprandial bloating. A Taiwanese study administered ginger capsules to 24 adults and observed changes in their stomachs. The study found that ginger had the effect of rapidly eliminating remaining food.

◇Sleep on your left side instead of your right

Sleeping on your right side can cause acidic food to shift toward the esophagus, potentially triggering or worsening reflux esophagitis. A Stanford University study even found that sleeping on your right side worsens heartburn. Another study found that subjects who slept on their right side experienced more reflux and more acid secretion than those who slept on their left.

Therefore, sleeping on your left side helps prevent reflux esophagitis and promotes digestion. Reflux esophagitis is an inflammation of the esophagus caused by stomach contents or acid refluxing into the esophagus. The stomach bulges to the left. Sleeping on the left side ensures that any remaining food remains in the stomach, toward the wide gastric pouch. This reduces the risk of food refluxing into the esophagus during sleep.

◇ Keep your chest open to avoid arching your back

Poor posture affects the entire body. When the spine, the center of our bodies, and the muscles and joints surrounding it become misaligned, the entire body's balance is disrupted. In particular, hunched backs, leaning forward with a hunched back, and forward head posture can cause indigestion. This pressure on the epigastric region and digestive system leads to gas buildup in the abdomen. This can lead to heartburn and recurrent burping.

Therefore, maintaining proper posture is beneficial for digestion. When sitting, push your buttocks all the way to the edge of the chair and straighten your back. Opening your chest naturally restores the normal curve of your lower back. When standing, your head, chest, and hips should be in a straight line. This distributes the weight of your head efficiently, preventing strain on ligaments and muscles. It's also beneficial to slightly raise your head. When walking, keep your elbows at right angles and your feet flat on the ground, as if you're pushing against the floor. It's also important to ensure your ears, shoulders, and hips are at the same height.

Cabbage would be good on top, but

People with weak stomachs should eat rice and ginger.

Somehow, ginger seemed more stimulating...

Sleeping on the left side

They say it's also good for reflux esophagitis.
