The season of "heavenly high skies" has returned, a time when horses grow fat. The cooler weather brings back appetite, and with Chuseok, the nation's biggest holiday, approaching, countless fall indigestion cases await. As a child, when indigestion arose, adults would whip out none other than a needle. Does this folk remedy, "hand pricking," actually work?

◆ 'Hand-picking' has an effect... You need to find the exact acupuncture point

Dr. Hwang Man-ki, the director of Hwang Man-ki Korean Medicine Clinic, said, "When you have a cold, 'hand picking' is clearly effective." Hand picking is a method of acupuncture, a type of emergency treatment in Oriental medicine. It stimulates specific peripheral nerves, transmitting the sensation to the brain, where it activates the autonomic nervous system. This stimulates the movement of the stomach and intestines, relieving the cold. Dr. Hwang continued, "However, you must be careful because 'hand picking' must be performed on the correct small acupoint for immediate results."

◆ It is safer to receive 'hands-off' treatment from a professional if possible

The Shaoshang point (少商穴) is an important acupuncture point located right next to the outer root angle of the thumb nail. Director Hwang said, "If you prick your hand with a pen, needle, or toothpick that has not been properly disinfected, side effects such as bacterial infection or skin tissue damage may occur." He also said, "If you are very scared, diabetic, have heart disease, are a child, or are an elderly person with weak physical strength, you should be careful as side effects such as nausea or dizziness may occur when doing 'hand picking'." Therefore, it is important to receive 'hand picking' treatment from a Korean medicine doctor if possible. Indigestion can also sometimes be an early symptom of myocardial infarction, so if your symptoms do not improve and instead worsen, you should go to the emergency room immediately.

◆ It is good to drink herbal tea to help digestion before eating

If you have indigestion, it is most important to accurately identify the root cause from a specialist. However, if a specialist is not around and it is difficult to perform the small-point acupuncture method, there is a method you can try. Press the Hegu point (合谷穴), Naegwan point (內關穴), or Jungwan point (中脘穴) with your fingers with a strength that is slightly painful. Director Hwang also advised, "For people who tend to have indigestion, it is very helpful to drink herbal teas that help digestion, such as 'ginger tea', 'cinnamon peel tea', and 'plum tea' before Chuseok to prevent it."

◆ If you have frequent diarrhea, there is a possibility of reflux esophagitis or gastritis.

If you frequently experience recurring symptoms, you likely have reflux esophagitis, gastritis, or functional dyspepsia. Dr. Hwang emphasized, "It's important to visit a specialized medical institution, such as a Korean medicine clinic, to receive an accurate diagnosis of your constitution and symptoms before beginning active treatment."

Director Hwang also stated, "Indigestion requires managing your daily eating habits. Avoid foods that can be difficult to digest, such as those high in fat, as much as possible, and avoid frequent alcohol consumption." Caution is also advised against foods with strong flavors, such as those heavily spiced, as these can also trigger indigestion.

Furthermore, it's crucial to manage and manage psychological stress and mental fatigue. Dr. Hwang explained, "Chronic stress can lead to mental fatigue, which in turn can lead to imbalances in bodily functions, often contributing to various digestive disorders." Therefore, he recommended herbal teas, such as "Apple Tea" and "Lotus Seed Tea," for their anti-stress properties. Regular consumption of herbal teas can significantly improve digestive function and prevent symptoms.

Last time I ate Chinese food, I was in a high-class state.

I think I kept pressing the acupressure points on my fingers.
