Our intestines rely on a proper balance of various bacteria to digest food and prevent infections and inflammation. Gut health also affects mental health, weight, blood sugar, and the liver.

Whole grains, vegetables, onions, garlic, soybeans, and other prebiotic foods serve as food for beneficial gut bacteria. On the other hand, there are foods that disrupt the balance of gut bacteria or kill beneficial bacteria indiscriminately, damaging gut health. The American health and medical media 'Web MD' introduced the best and worst foods for gut health.

|The Best Food|

Fermented foods = Fermentation is a method of preserving food using bacteria and yeast. Fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut contain lactic acid bacteria. These probiotics serve as an excellent source of beneficial bacteria.

Banana = Bananas supply inulin, a type of fiber that helps beneficial bacteria grow in the gut.

Green leafy vegetables are rich in fiber and special carbohydrates that help intestinal bacteria.

Whole grains = Our bodies cannot break down fiber on their own. When fiber reaches the large intestine, intestinal bacteria ferment it. During this process, acids are produced that nourish the intestinal cells and help protect the gut from harmful bacteria.

Polyphenols = Polyphenols, a type of compound found in plants, protect cells from damage while fighting inflammation and infection. Colorful foods such as tea and red wine are rich in polyphenols. The polyphenols in green tea help eliminate harmful bacteria like E. coli and soothe symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease and peptic ulcers. Additionally, polyphenols can also promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

|Worst Food|

Red meat (red meat, red meat) can cause the growth of intestinal bacteria that block arteries. It is better to cut back on red meat and consume low-fat proteins such as fish or plant-based proteins like beans and tofu. If you cannot completely give up red meats such as beef, pork, and lamb, it is better to eat lean cuts of meat only.

Fried foods = According to a study on mice, heated oil that penetrates fried foods can damage healthy gut bacteria.

Foods containing antibiotics = Antibiotics cannot distinguish between good bacteria and bad bacteria, so they kill all of them. Farmers often treat animals with antibiotics to prevent infections. Consuming these animal products can kill healthy bacteria in the gut. Additionally, some bacteria develop antibiotic resistance over time, making the drugs less effective and leading to the emergence of superbugs that are difficult to eliminate.

Alcohol=Drinking heavily can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria and may promote the growth of harmful bacteria. Moderation is key when it comes to alcohol.

Caffeine = Consuming too much caffeine-rich beverages such as coffee, carbonated drinks, and even chocolate can increase caffeine levels in the body, filling the intestines. In such cases, the digestive system becomes excited and often causes diarrhea.
