October 19th every year is designated as 'World Breast Cancer Day' by the World Health Organization (WHO). Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the country, and early detection through screening and healthy eating habits are very important. However, a study has shown that simply drinking soy milk can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by as much as 37%.

According to a study published in the international journal 'International Journal of Public Health' by Professor Sahha Em Alnefei's research team at Taif University in Saudi Arabia in September this year, soy milk rich in plant-based estrogens significantly reduces the risk of developing breast cancer.

The research team conducted a case-control study to evaluate the correlation between certain plant-based estrogens widely used in Saudi Arabia and breast cancer. As a result, among 12 supplements or foods rich in plant-based estrogens, soy milk was found to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by 37% and act as a protective factor against breast cancer.

Conversely, the intake of Echinacea was classified as a risk factor, increasing the risk of breast cancer by 144%. Subgroup analysis based on menstrual status showed that in premenopausal women, Echinacea and licorice root increased the risk of breast cancer by 275% and 128%, respectively. In postmenopausal women, green tea was found to increase the risk of breast cancer by 55%.

The research team stated, "Asian women have a lower incidence of breast cancer compared to Western women," and explained, "This is because they tend to consume soy products much more." They further emphasized, "Since soy milk significantly reduces the risk of breast cancer in Saudi women, it could potentially play a role in preventing breast cancer in adults."

Meanwhile, according to a study published in April this year by Professor Seyed Mohammad Mazroumi's research team at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran in the international journal 'Iranian Biotechnology Journal,' soybean isoflavones have been shown to exhibit 'anti-breast cancer effects' through various signaling pathways in breast cancer cells.
