For instance, it is contraindicated in individuals with an allergy to its components, patients with type 1 diabetes, those with diabetic ketoacidosis, and patients who are undergoing renal dialysis. Patients with impaired kidney function should have their kidneys regularly monitored while using this medication. It is particularly advisable to check kidney function at least once a year. Due to limited experience in patients with heart failure, this medication should be used with caution. Acute pancreatitis may occur; therefore, if symptoms such as abdominal pain arise, the use of this medication should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. There may be symptoms of bullous pemphigoid, such as blisters or skin rashes; if these symptoms occur, this medication should be discontinued and a specialist consulted. The most common side effect reported is urinary tract infection, and other reported side effects include hypoglycemia, pancreatitis, and hypersensitivity. Caution is especially advised when this medication is taken together with insulin or sulfonylureas due to an increased risk of hypoglycemia. This medication may also increase the risk of genital fungal infections, so prompt treatment should be sought if symptoms occur. It is best to avoid using this medication during pregnancy unless specifically indicated, and breastfeeding should be discontinued if this medication is being used. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 18 years of age, so it is not recommended for this group.
