Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to treat primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is prescribed to supplement dietary changes when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. It is particularly effective for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (type IIa). It helps lower cholesterol levels to maintain vascular health. Therefore, it contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases by improving lipid abnormalities.
This medication can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. The initial dosage is 2.5 or 5 mg once daily, adjusted as needed for the maintenance dose. The maintenance dose is typically 10 mg once daily, which is sufficient for most patients. The maintenance dose should be adjusted closely based on LDL-cholesterol levels, treatment targets, and patient's response at intervals of 4 weeks or more, with a maximum daily dose of 20 mg.
