Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes when used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapies, contributing to the effective management of blood sugar levels. It helps to stabilize the patient's blood glucose levels.
The 100/1000 mg sustained-release tablet is to be taken once daily, one tablet at a time. This medication consists of sitagliptin and metformin and is used for diabetes treatment. First, sitagliptin can rarely cause severe allergic reactions, so if symptoms like hives, rash, or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Additionally, sitagliptin may lead to a serious side effect called pancreatitis, which involves inflammation of the pancreas; if symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea persist, notify healthcare professionals immediately. The metformin ingredient can cause lactic acidosis, a rare but potentially fatal metabolic disorder; if sudden muscle pain, difficulty breathing, fatigue, abdominal pain, or weakness occurs, stop taking the medication immediately and visit a hospital. This medication should not be administered to patients with impaired kidney function, severe infections, dehydration, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction, and it should be suspended for a certain period before and after imaging tests using iodinated contrast agents. It is advisable for pregnant or nursing women and children under 18 years of age not to use this medication. While taking this medication, regular checks of kidney function, blood tests, and vitamin B12 levels are necessary, and excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided. Also, irregular meals, excessive exercise, or combining with other hypoglycemic agents can increase the risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is required. If surgery is planned, medication should be stopped 48 hours prior to the procedure and resumed only after normal kidney function is confirmed post-surgery. During the course of taking this medication, gastrointestinal disorders, headaches, and upper respiratory infections may occur; if symptoms are severe, consult a physician. Finally, while this medication assists with blood sugar control, it is essential to adhere to dietary and exercise protocols, along with regularly monitoring blood sugar and kidney function for safe treatment.
