Precautions
This medication consists of two components, sitagliptin and metformin, and is mainly used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
First, sitagliptin may rarely cause serious allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as rash, hives, or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue taking the medication immediately and consult a physician.
There is also a risk of acute pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so it is important to carefully monitor for symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and severe abdominal discomfort, and discontinue use if symptoms occur.
Metformin can cause lactic acidosis, a rare but very serious metabolic complication, so patients with impaired kidney function or liver disease should not take this medication. Additionally, it should be avoided in conditions that can affect kidney function such as dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, and acute myocardial infarction.
This medication should not be given to patients with moderate to severe impaired kidney function, acute and unstable heart failure, patients scheduled for tests using radiopaque agents, and women who are pregnant or nursing.
During treatment, irregular meals, intense exercise, or interactions with other medications may increase the risk of hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis, so caution is required.
Periodic monitoring of kidney function, blood tests, and vitamin B12 levels should be conducted during the course of treatment, and alcohol consumption should be avoided.
Before and after surgery, this medication may need to be discontinued for a certain period, and if severe joint pain, skin rash, or blisters appear, you should notify your doctor immediately and seek medical attention.
Lastly, this medication can induce hypoglycemia, so when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, hypoglycemic symptoms should be carefully monitored.
