This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes in conjunction with diet and exercise. It can be initiated as monotherapy, and if previous pharmacologic therapy has not been experienced and controlling blood sugar alone is difficult, it can be used in combination with metformin. This medication is also used in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or thiazolidinediones when blood sugar control is not sufficient with monotherapy. If blood sugar control remains difficult after combination therapy with sulfonylureas and metformin, this medication is additionally administered. It can also be used in combination when blood sugar control is inadequate after insulin therapy alone or with metformin. It is used effectively to improve blood sugar control in this wide variety of situations.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication can be administered once daily at 50mg in the morning as monotherapy or in two divided doses of 50mg each (total 100mg) in the morning and evening if previous diabetes drug therapy experience is absent. When used in combination with metformin or thiazolidinediones, the recommended dose is 100mg (50mg taken twice daily). When used in combination with sulfonylureas, the recommended dose is 50mg daily taken once in the morning.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with known allergic reactions to the active ingredient or other components. It should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Additionally, patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not take this medication. Liver function abnormalities can occur rarely during use of this medication; therefore, regular liver function tests should be conducted. If liver function levels significantly rise or symptoms of jaundice appear, the medication should be discontinued immediately. This medication is not recommended for patients with heart failure, particularly those with severe heart failure. Due to the risk of acute pancreatitis, if symptoms of pancreatitis occurring include abdominal pain or vomiting, a physician should be consulted immediately. There is a risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, dose adjustments may be needed when taken with insulin secretagogues. If symptoms such as dizziness occur, it is advisable to avoid driving or operating machinery. Severe joint pain or skin lesions such as blisters or ulcers should be reported to healthcare professionals promptly. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication, and it is also not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; therefore, appropriate supportive treatment is necessary based on symptoms. Keep out of reach of children and do not transfer to other containers for safety.

Hives, severe swelling (including angioedema and peripheral edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, respiratory distress, asthma attacks, severe rash with fever, blisters, skin peeling, mucosal pain in mouth/eyes, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), hepatitis, sudden and severe headache, seizures, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, significantly decreased urine output, severe swelling, elevated blood pressure, acute pancreatitis, blister-like lesions
