This medication is used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency in the elderly, adolescents, and adults who have low levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency significantly impacts bone health, and improving the deficiency helps maintain strong bones. This medication is effective in normalizing vitamin D levels across different age groups to protect health. Therefore, it is used to prevent and treat symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 200,000 IU of cholecalciferol by intramuscular injection. For the elderly, administer 100,000 IU of cholecalciferol by intramuscular injection. Ensure that the annual dose does not exceed 600,000 IU of cholecalciferol.

Child administration

Administer 200,000 IU of cholecalciferol by intramuscular injection.

Precautions

This medication contains vitamin D, so it is essential to check the total vitamin D intake when taking fortified foods or other vitamin D products. Regularly monitor the calcium levels in the blood, and if the serum calcium level rises too much or if there is excessive calcium being excreted in urine, this medication should be discontinued. While taking this medication, various side effects may appear, including headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, digestive disturbances, dehydration, high blood pressure, and kidney issues; consult a healthcare professional immediately if any unusual symptoms arise. For patients with low vitamin D levels, periodic blood tests should be performed to monitor their condition, and if renal function is impaired, adjust the dosage or discontinue use. Interactions may occur when taken with other medications, so individuals taking anticonvulsants, diuretics, antacids, or warfarin should inform their healthcare provider. In pregnancy, it is advisable not to use this medication due to the risk of harm to the fetus in case of overdose. Its safety and efficacy in children under 12 years of age have not been established; therefore, it is recommended not to use it in this age group. In case of overdose, discontinue this medication, reduce calcium intake, increase fluid intake, and consider treatment that promotes diuresis.
