Precautions

This medication may disturb the balance of normal bacteria in the mouth; therefore, it is advisable not to use it for long periods. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication should not use it. Patients with asthma or allergic diseases, or a history of such conditions, should use this medication with caution. While using this medication, discoloration of teeth or gums may occur, calculus may increase, and changes in the sensation in the mouth may occur. In particular, children may experience peeling of the oral mucosa or slight irritation. Rarely, severe allergic reactions such as shock may occur; thus, if symptoms like nausea, cold sweat, dizziness, or difficulty breathing occur, use should be stopped immediately and a hospital should be consulted. Occasionally, skin rash or hives may develop, and use should be discontinued if these symptoms occur. This medication may rarely cause inflammation of the salivary glands. Antibiotics should be used for general bacterial infections, and the treatment period for this medication should not typically exceed 10 days. In cases where both gingival inflammation and periodontitis are present, the effectiveness of periodontitis treatment should not be assessed based on the presence or absence of gingival inflammation after using this medication. This medication may cause discoloration on tooth surfaces, dentures, and the back of the tongue, so caution is warranted. In particular, patients wearing rough or poorly-fitting dentures may find that discoloration is difficult to remove and may need to change their dentures; therefore, caution should be exercised. During pregnancy, this medication should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks, and during breastfeeding, it should be used with caution as it is not clearly known whether this medication passes into breast milk. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children under 18 years of age have not been sufficiently established. This medication is for rinsing the mouth only and should not be ingested.
