Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in controlling blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also be administered as monotherapy, but in cases where a patient has not previously taken diabetes medications and is having difficulty controlling blood sugar with monotherapy, it may be used in combination with metformin. Additionally, this drug may be administered in combination for patients whose blood sugar is inadequately controlled with monotherapy using metformin or sulfonylurea. This medication may also be added when blood sugar control remains difficult despite insulin therapy alone or combined with metformin. If blood sugar control is still insufficient after combinations such as sulfonylurea and metformin or empagliflozin and metformin, this drug can be used. This medication is effective in improving blood sugar control when used in various treatment methods together.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to the active ingredient or any other components. It should also not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Caution is necessary when used with insulin or sulfonylurea medications that may cause hypoglycemia. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when combined with such medications, so dosage adjustments may be required. The use of this medication is not recommended in patients with heart failure, particularly those classified as NYHA Class III-IV, and should be administered with caution in patients with Classes I-II heart failure. Acute pancreatitis may occur, so if severe and persistent abdominal pain develops during treatment, the medication should be stopped immediately and a doctor consulted. A skin disease called bullous pemphigoid may occur, so if blisters or skin lesions appear, the healthcare provider should be notified immediately, and the medication may need to be discontinued if necessary. Hypoglycemic symptoms may arise while taking this medication, so patients should be well informed about hypoglycemia and take appropriate action immediately if symptoms occur. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication as its safety has not been established. This medication is not recommended for children under 10 years old, or for children and adolescents aged 10 to under 17 years, as its safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently established. Elderly patients may use this medication without special dosage adjustments, but patients with decreased kidney or liver function may also be administered this medication without dosage adjustments. In cases of overdose, non-absorbed portions of the medication should be removed from the gastrointestinal tract, clinical symptoms should be monitored, and appropriate treatment should be provided as needed. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers, as this may impair its quality.
