Osteoarthritis of the knee and periarthritis of the shoulder are common joint disorders that occur in the knee and shoulder, respectively. Osteoarthritis of the knee is a condition characterized by degeneration of the joint cartilage leading to knee pain and limited movement, while periarthritis of the shoulder results from inflammation of the tissues around the shoulder, resulting in pain and limited mobility. The treatment for both conditions aims to restore joint function and alleviate pain. Therefore, this medication is used for osteoarthritis of the knee and periarthritis of the shoulder.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

As sodium hyaluronate, administer 25 mg once a week for 5 consecutive weeks into the knee joint or shoulder joint (shoulder joint cavity, subacromial bursa, or biceps tendon sheath). Adjust the number of administrations as appropriate according to symptoms. This medication is administered into the knee joint, so it should be performed under strict aseptic conditions.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, individuals who are allergic to this medication or its components, those with skin diseases or infections in the joint area, those with liver function issues or a history of liver disorders, and individuals allergic to avian proteins should not use it. Rarely, shock or allergic reactions may occur with this medication, so patients must be closely monitored after administration. If symptoms such as swelling around the face or eyes, rash, or itching occur, use should be discontinued immediately, and appropriate treatment should be initiated. There may be temporary pain, swelling, redness, warmth, or severe pressure at the injection site, as well as symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, and headache. This medication may worsen inflammation in severely inflamed joints, so it is advisable to treat inflammation first before using this medication. Additionally, after injection, stabilization of the joint area should be maintained, and care should be taken to prevent leakage of the medication outside the joint. Patients with inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis or gouty arthritis may experience temporary exacerbation of inflammation. During the 48 hours following injection, intense exercise such as jogging or tennis, or exercises that involve prolonged weight-bearing should be avoided. It is advisable not to use this medication in conjunction with other intra-articular injectables as safety and effectiveness have not been verified. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication with caution, and it is safest to avoid use while breastfeeding. Safety has not been established for children, so it should only be used with caution in necessary cases. Elderly patients may have decreased bodily functions, so caution is necessary when using this medication. This medication must be precisely injected intra-articularly in a sterile environment, and administration should be discontinued if symptoms do not improve within 5 doses. If there is excess joint fluid, it is advisable to remove it prior to injection. Intravascular injection is strictly prohibited, and this medication should not be used for ophthalmic purposes. During injection, an appropriate needle should be used, and the ampoule should be shaken to ensure even content before slowly injecting it into the syringe. When cutting the ampoule, it is safest to clean it thoroughly to prevent contaminants from entering. Caution should be exercised as mixing with certain disinfectants may produce precipitates, and any opened single-use ampoule should be used quickly, with any remaining portion disposed of. Administering a local anesthetic prior to this injection can help alleviate pain.
