Treatment of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, relief of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and maintenance therapy, combination therapy with antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori infection-related gastrointestinal ulcers, treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
This medication is used to treat ulcers that occur in the stomach and duodenum. It also alleviates the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, such as reflux esophagitis and aids in long-term treatment. It is used together with antibiotics to enhance therapeutic effects for patients with gastrointestinal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. Additionally, although rare, it is also utilized for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome caused by excessive gastric acid secretion. In summary, this medication is effective in improving both the symptoms and causes of various gastrointestinal-related diseases.
For adults, the recommended dose of Rabeprazole Sodium is 10 mg orally once daily. Depending on symptoms, 20 mg can be taken orally once daily. The usual treatment duration is 8 weeks for gastric ulcers and 6 weeks for duodenal ulcers. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease, take 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. If therapy has not been successful after 8 weeks of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) administration, an additional 8 weeks of 10 mg or 20 mg twice daily orally may be considered, but twice daily dosing of 20 mg is limited to patients with severe mucosal damage. To relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, take 10 mg once daily. If symptoms persist after 4 weeks, further evaluation is needed. Once symptoms resolve, on-demand therapy with 10 mg taken once daily may be considered to manage any subsequent symptoms. For long-term maintenance of gastroesophageal reflux disease, 10 mg or 20 mg orally may be administered depending on the patient. For Helicobacter pylori eradication, patients with Helicobacter pylori infection should receive eradication therapy. A combination of 20 mg of this drug with 500 mg of clarithromycin and 1 g of amoxicillin administered twice daily for 7 days is recommended. For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the recommended initial dosage for adults is 60 mg once daily, with the dose adjustable up to 120 mg daily depending on individual patient needs. Dosages up to 100 mg can be given once daily, while the 120 mg dose should be divided into two doses of 60 mg each. Patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome can have experience with taking this drug for up to 1 year. ◯ In patients with liver disease, adverse reactions related to hepatic encephalopathy have been reported in cirrhosis patients; thus, careful administration is necessary. ◯ In children, safety has not been established. ◯ For the elderly, careful administration is needed due to commonly decreased liver function.
This medication should not be used in patients with certain allergic reactions or those who have had allergic symptoms to this drug or similar medications in the past. Additionally, it is contraindicated for patients who are taking certain antibiotics or other medications, and for pregnant or nursing women. Care should be taken when using this medicine in patients with liver function problems or the elderly. Patients with a history of allergies should be administered with caution. If allergic symptoms such as skin rash or itching appear during the intake of this medicine, the patient should stop taking it immediately and consult a healthcare professional. Regular blood tests are recommended as abnormal results may occur. Liver function tests should be continuously monitored and drug administration should be discontinued if abnormalities are found. Caution is necessary if cardiovascular symptoms occur, as it may affect the heart or blood pressure. Gastrointestinal symptoms may appear; therefore, if symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting persist, the patient should inform healthcare professionals. Mental symptoms or neurological abnormalities such as headaches, dizziness, and insomnia may occur, and if severe, the patient should consult a doctor. Respiratory symptoms or, rarely, serious lung diseases may appear, so if severe shortness of breath or worsening cough occurs, the patient should inform healthcare professionals immediately. Various side effects such as muscle pain, joint pain, skin rash, and hair loss have been reported; hence, the patient's condition should be closely monitored. Abnormal symptoms related to the eyes or ears may also occur, so if there are changes in vision or hearing, it is advisable to report them. Abnormal urinary tract symptoms or genital bleeding have also been reported, so if such symptoms occur, the patient should consult healthcare professionals. Long-term use may increase the risk of fractures, and regular evaluations are necessary if taking for an extended period. Electrolyte abnormalities like hypomagnesemia may occur, so if taking for a long time or with certain medications, magnesium levels should be checked regularly. Since this drug strongly inhibits gastric acid secretion, there may be a slightly increased risk of bacterial infections in the stomach, so if diarrhea persists or is severe, it should be reported to healthcare professionals. Caution is advised while driving or operating machinery due to possible drowsiness. Interactions may occur when this drug is combined with certain medications, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals. It is safest to avoid this drug during pregnancy or while nursing. Elderly patients may experience side effects due to decreased liver function; therefore, drug administration should be adjusted or discontinued if symptoms occur. Safety in pediatric patients has not been established, thus its use is not recommended. There is no specific antidote for overdose; appropriate treatment should be provided based on the symptoms. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed, and it should be kept out of reach of children. Regular check-ups and consultations with healthcare professionals are essential for safe management during long-term use.
