Effectiveness in improving symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and urinary flow, reducing the need for surgery
This medication helps reduce the enlarged prostatic tissue and improves urinary flow for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It also reduces the frequency of acute urinary retention, alleviating discomfort and decreasing the need for prostatic surgery (e.g., transurethral resection of the prostate). Therefore, it effectively improves symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia overall.
As finasteride, administer orally 5 mg once daily, regardless of meals. Treatment should continue for at least 6 months, even if symptoms improve during this period.
This medication should not be used in children or women, particularly pregnant women or those of childbearing potential should avoid contact with broken pieces of this medication. Exposure to this medication during pregnancy may pose risks of abnormalities in the external genitalia of male fetuses, so caution is necessary. Patients with allergies to this medication or its ingredients should avoid use, as well as those with genetic lactose intolerance. Patients with liver function issues should use this medication cautiously and report any adverse reactions to medical staff. This medication is generally well-tolerated, though sexual function-related side effects may occur, and rare reports of breast enlargement or rash have been noted. Long-term use has been associated with reports of male breast cancer, although a clear causal relationship has not been established, and there may be an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer, so monitoring is advised. This medication has minimal interactions with other drugs, but consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary before use. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and it is not proven safe for use in children. It can be used in the elderly without dosage adjustment; however, ongoing monitoring by medical professionals during use is important. Regular check-ups and PSA level monitoring are essential, as it may influence prostate cancer diagnosis. This medication may reduce the volume of ejaculate, but this typically does not have a significant effect on sexual function. There is no specific treatment for overdose, but adherence to the recommended dosage is vital. Store this medication out of reach of children and be careful not to transfer it to another container.
