Treatment of kidney disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes
This medication is used for the treatment of hypertension, particularly in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, helping to prevent and manage kidney disease. Thus, it contributes to the overall health improvement of patients by controlling blood pressure and maintaining kidney health.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For adults with hypertension, the recommended dose of losartan potassium is 50 mg taken orally once daily. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the dosage can be divided and taken twice daily or increased to 100 mg once daily if necessary. For patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, the usual dosage is 50 mg once daily, with the possibility of increasing to 100 mg once daily as needed.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing between 20 kg and 50 kg, the recommended dosage is 25 mg once daily, with a maximum increase to 50 mg possible. For those weighing over 50 kg, the recommended dosage is 50 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired liver function or certain genetic disorders. Use with caution in elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function and patients at risk of rapid drops in blood pressure; their condition should be regularly monitored during administration. During treatment, blood pressure, potassium levels, and kidney function should be regularly tested to check for abnormalities. If blood pressure drops too low or kidney function worsens, consult a doctor immediately; treatment may need to be halted if necessary. This medication can cause dangerously elevated potassium levels in the blood if taken with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements, so care should be taken not to use them together. It may interact with other medications, so consult a doctor or pharmacist especially if taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), lithium, or anticoagulants. During treatment with this medication, sudden dizziness or fainting may occur; caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should preferably not use this medication; if necessary, breastfeeding should be discontinued. This medication should not be administered to children, particularly those under the age of 6 or those with severely impaired kidney function. In the event of an overdose, symptoms such as low blood pressure and heart rhythm abnormalities may occur; contact a healthcare facility immediately for appropriate treatment. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is safest not to transfer it to another container.
