View approved original text

This medicine is used to supply selenium to patients with selenium deficiency that cannot be supplemented through nutrition, thereby improving the deficient state.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 100 μg of selenium by intramuscular or intravenous injection daily. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 200 μg daily. When administered additionally to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) basic injections, a daily dose of 100 μg of selenium should be used.

Precautions

This medication contains selenium and should not be used in patients with selenium poisoning. Patients with allergic reactions to this drug or its components should not be administered. Pain or allergic reactions may occur rarely upon injection, so caution is needed. If symptoms such as dermatitis, foul odor during sweating or breathing, hair loss, agitation, or vomiting occur while using this medication, its use should be immediately discontinued. Care should be taken to avoid precipitation when mixing with other intravenous infusion solutions, especially if the pH of the solution is below 7.0 or used with reducing agents like vitamin C, as precipitation may occur. If there is any precipitation or color change after mixing, it should not be used. This drug contains sodium, so patients on a low-sodium diet should consider this fact. This medication should only be administered to pregnant women or women of childbearing potential when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks, as fetal malformation has been reported in animal experiments. The safety of this drug in breastfeeding women has not been established, so considerations should be made to discontinue breastfeeding or the medication. In case of overdose, symptoms such as garlic breath, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may appear, while chronic overdose may affect nail and hair growth and cause peripheral nerve damage. In the event of overdose, treatments such as gastric lavage, induced urination, and high-dose vitamin C administration are required, and in very severe cases, dialysis may be necessary. The drug Dimercaprol may increase selenium toxicity, so it should not be used in case of overdose. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in a sealed container in a dry, room temperature environment. Once opened, it should be used immediately, and transferring it to another container should be avoided as it may lead to accidents and quality deterioration.
