This medication is used in the treatment and prevention of herpes virus infections, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating shingles viral infections, helping particularly to alleviate acute pain. It is utilized for the treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years old. Thus, it is widely used for the treatment of various viral infections.

How it is given

Adult administration

1. For the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, administer 200 mg of acyclovir orally 5 times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days, with consideration for extending treatment in cases of severe primary infections. 2. This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this medication or its components or have experienced hypersensitivity reactions. Patients with poor kidney function may be at higher risk for neuropsychiatric side effects when using this medication. Rarely, serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may occur when using this medication, so if symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness appear, usage should be discontinued immediately and medical assistance sought. Skin rashes, fever, blisters, and urticaria may occur, and if such symptoms develop, treatment should be stopped and the patient should receive appropriate care. This medication can cause various skin side effects such as hair loss, dermatitis, and severe skin conditions, so caution is necessary. Mental issues, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, tremors, insomnia, and other neurological side effects may occur, particularly in elderly or patients with reduced kidney function. Renal complications such as renal failure, hematuria, and proteinuria may occur, therefore, kidney function should be monitored periodically. Blood-related side effects such as leukopenia, anemia, and bleeding may arise, and if abnormal symptoms occur, consultation with medical personnel is necessary. Liver function abnormalities or symptoms of hepatitis and jaundice should be carefully monitored. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, and if symptoms are severe, treatment should be stopped and appropriate measures taken. Sufficient hydration is very important during treatment with this medication, especially to prevent dehydration during high-dose administration. To enhance treatment efficacy, administration of this medication should begin within 5 days for shingles after the onset of skin symptoms, and within 3 days for chickenpox. For patients with weakened immunity, intravenous therapy may be considered. Patients should be cautious when engaging in activities such as driving or operating machinery during treatment, especially those with compromised kidney function, as consciousness disturbances may occur. Interactions may arise when used in conjunction with other medications, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers of any other medications currently being taken. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should discuss potential risks to the fetus with their doctor when using this medication, and breastfeeding should be discontinued if using during lactation. In cases of overdose, severe neurological symptoms and kidney damage may occur, so dosage must be strictly adhered to and immediate medical attention should be sought in case of overdose.
