Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular diseases in patients over 55 years old who are at high risk for cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly suitable for patients who cannot use ACE inhibitors. This medication is used to control blood pressure and protect cardiovascular health, thus improving the overall health status of the patient.
For essential hypertension, an oral dose of 40 mg of Telmisartan should be taken once daily with water, regardless of meals. In some patients, a dose of 20 mg taken once daily may also be effective. If necessary, the dose can be increased up to 80 mg once daily, with the maximum blood pressure lowering effect observed 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. For reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, 80 mg taken orally once daily with water is recommended.
This medication can cause serious harm or death to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should not be used in individuals with hypersensitivity to it, in pregnant or nursing women, patients with severely impaired liver function, hereditary angioedema patients, and those with certain kidney diseases. Caution should be taken in elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, moderately impaired liver function, patients with heart valve diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and those with severe kidney impairment. Various adverse reactions may occur during the use of this medication, including infections, blood disorders, allergic reactions, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, mental changes, dizziness, hypotension, respiratory symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, myalgia, and kidney impairment; therefore, symptoms should be closely monitored. In particular, serious adverse reactions such as angioedema, hyperkalemia, renal dysfunction, shock, liver dysfunction, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis may occur, and if any abnormal symptoms appear, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. Regular monitoring of serum potassium and creatinine levels is necessary in patients with renal impairment, and hypotension may occur if blood volume or sodium is deficient, thus requiring correction prior to administration. Additionally, this medication may have an increased effect when taken with other antihypertensive agents, and the risk of side effects may increase when used in combination with certain drugs, so it is essential to inform the physician or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. Women who are planning to become pregnant or who may become pregnant should avoid using this medication, and nursing mothers are also advised to refrain from use. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 18 years of age, so it is not recommended. Elderly patients should be closely monitored for risks of excessive blood pressure reduction, which may lead to strokes and other complications during use. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, abnormal heart rate, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, thus requiring immediate medical attention, as this medication is not removed by dialysis.
