Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

The combination therapy of amlodipine and olmesartan medoxomil is used when blood pressure is not adequately controlled in patients with essential hypertension. This treatment effectively lowers blood pressure, helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Both components work cooperatively by expanding the blood vessels and participating in blood pressure regulation. Therefore, it is used for patients with essential hypertension to stabilize their blood pressure.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy; hence, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to any of its components or similar drugs, are pregnant or lactating, or have severe hypotension, valvular heart disease, acute heart failure, or severe renal or hepatic disease. Patients with low blood volume or electrolyte imbalance should be closely monitored initially, as blood pressure may drop sharply upon administration; immediate action should be taken if hypotensive symptoms occur. This medication may affect kidney function, so patients with weakened kidney function should regularly check their kidney status and electrolyte levels through blood tests. Patients with impaired liver function or progressive liver cirrhosis may experience severe side effects, such as hepatic coma, when using this medication; caution is required. As this medication has blood pressure-lowering effects, elderly patients or those with other cardiovascular conditions should use it with particular caution and monitor to avoid excessive hypotension. While taking this medication, dizziness or drowsiness may occur; thus, it's advisable to avoid risky activities such as driving or operating machinery. This medication can interact with other drugs, so particularly when taken with lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, other antihypertensives, and potassium-sparing diuretics, consult a physician. If photosensitivity reactions appear on the skin or new skin lesions develop, inform a doctor immediately, limit sun exposure, and take appropriate protective measures. This medication is not recommended for use in children, as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension and palpitations may occur; seek medical attention promptly for appropriate treatment. Store in a place out of reach of children, avoiding moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.
