Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers and improvement of gastric mucosal lesions
This medication is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Additionally, it is effective in preventing ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and in pre-operative administration for the prevention of Mendelson's syndrome. It also helps improve damage to the gastric mucosa associated with acute gastritis or exacerbations of chronic gastritis, as well as upper gastrointestinal bleeding (erosion, hemorrhage, redness, edema). In summary, it is used to prevent damage to the gastric mucosa and assist in healing to improve gastric health.
As ranitidine, 150 mg is taken orally twice a day, in the morning and at bedtime. For gastric and duodenal ulcers, either 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg once daily at bedtime is administered. For duodenal ulcer patients, 300 mg twice daily is particularly indicated. For maintenance therapy in recurrent ulcer patients, 150 mg is administered once daily at bedtime. Gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment lasts for 8 weeks.
For children aged 8 to 18 years, a single dose of 150 mg (2 mg per kg of body weight) may be administered up to twice a day.
This medication should not be used in patients who have had an allergic reaction to its components. Patients with a history of acute porphyria should avoid this medication as it may worsen symptoms. It contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should not be administered this drug. Patients with impaired renal function may require dosage adjustments or an alteration of dosing intervals due to potential drug accumulation. Patients with decreased liver function should also use caution. Patients who have previously experienced drug allergic reactions should take this medication cautiously. Elderly patients should be careful as drug responses may vary due to declining physical function. When taken with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding requires regular monitoring. This medication may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or middle-aged patients with newly developed dyspepsia should verify malignancy before taking it. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection have a gastric or duodenal ulcer that must be treated with eradication therapy. This medication can rarely cause serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock, so if any abnormal symptoms occur while taking it, stop immediately and inform healthcare personnel. Be aware of possible hypersensitivity reactions such as hives, rash, difficulty breathing, and low blood pressure. Blood tests may show leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, or other blood abnormalities, so if there are symptoms of fatigue, bleeding, or fever, testing is needed. Signs of liver dysfunction may occur, so treatment should be sought immediately if symptoms such as jaundice or fatigue appear. Rarely reported cardiovascular reactions include arrhythmias and vasculitis. Gastrointestinal symptoms like constipation, nausea, and abdominal pain may arise, and if discomfort persists, consultation is advisable. Dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and confusion may occur, so it's best to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery. Endocrine side effects such as gynecomastia or erectile dysfunction have been reported occasionally. Myalgia or arthralgia may appear, and if persistent, should be discussed with a physician. Skin rashes or hair loss have been reported rarely, so report any abnormal signs. During treatment, observe the condition of the disease closely and use the minimum required dose; if there is no effect, consider alternative therapies. Elderly individuals, those with chronic lung disease, and diabetic patients are at higher risk for pneumonia and should be cautious. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, refrain from driving or operating machinery. Drug interactions may occur, so inform your healthcare provider of any medications you are currently taking, especially anticoagulants, as blood tests should monitor your condition if used together. Certain medications may affect absorption or excretion, requiring adjustments in administration intervals. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication cautiously, and nursing mothers should only take it if necessary, as it can pass into breast milk. Safety in children has not been fully established, so caution is warranted. Elderly patients are often at risk for decreased renal function, requiring careful dosing adjustments or prolongation of intervals. This medication may influence the results of certain clinical tests, so discuss the testing methods with healthcare personnel. In case of overdose, specific symptoms are rare, but symptomatic treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary. Store out of reach of children, and do not transfer to another container as a safety measure.
