This medication helps to prevent and continuously treat asthma. It is also used to alleviate symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take Montelukast 10 mg once daily orally. This medication should be taken once a day; asthma patients should take it in the evening, while allergic rhinitis patients should decide the timing based on their condition. It should be taken 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6–14 years should take Montelukast 5 mg once daily, either by chewing or placing it on the tongue until it disintegrates without water. Children aged 2–5 years should take Montelukast 4 mg once daily, either by chewing or placing it on the tongue.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis, and patients and guardians should carefully observe for any psychiatric symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts. If serious symptoms appear during use, such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal impulses, stop taking it immediately and consult a doctor. Additionally, this medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with phenylketonuria should avoid taking it. For formulations containing lactose, patients with genetic problems like galactose intolerance or lactase deficiency should not take it. Side effects such as fatigue, headache, indigestion, cough, and rash may occur, and if these symptoms persist, consult a doctor. This medication is not a treatment for acute asthma attacks; separate emergency medications should be used for acute symptoms, and it should not be used alone for exercise-induced bronchospasm. Patients with an allergy to aspirin should not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while using this medication. Rare vascular symptoms such as eosinophilia may occur, so regular check-ups according to a doctor's instructions are necessary. No specific drug interactions have been reported when this medication is used in conjunction with other asthma treatments, but monitoring by a doctor may be required when used with certain medications. It should only be used during pregnancy if necessary, and nursing mothers should use it with caution. There is no specific antidote for overdose; general emergency care and clinical observation are necessary.
