Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Amlodipine or Olmesartan Medoxomil is used when blood pressure is not adequately controlled with monotherapy in patients with essential hypertension. These medications work by dilating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and reducing the burden on the heart and blood vessels. By controlling blood pressure, the risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced, thus improving overall blood pressure management. Therefore, they are effectively used in the treatment of essential hypertension.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn when taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. People allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication or similar class drugs, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease should not take this medication. Careful observation is required for patients who are depleted of fluids or salt, as blood pressure may drop too low upon initial administration, and appropriate measures should be taken if symptoms of hypotension occur. Because this medication has a vasodilatory effect, acute hypotension may occur rarely; thus, patients with cardiac valve issues should be cautious. Patients with significant heart disease or impaired kidney function may be at risk for further deterioration of kidney function or hypotension, so careful administration is necessary. Since this medication is metabolized in the liver, patients with decreased liver function may require dosage adjustment or caution. During treatment, side effects such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, swelling, and digestive issues may occur, and if abnormal symptoms arise, consultation with a physician should be sought. Particular attention is needed when taking this medication with potassium-containing drugs, as there is a risk of increased serum potassium levels requiring monitoring via blood tests. Interactions may occur with other medications, so patients should inform healthcare professionals about any other medications being taken. If breastfeeding, this medication may be transferred through breast milk, posing a risk of adverse reactions in the baby, so the decision to take it should be made carefully. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 18 years of age, so it is not recommended. Elderly patients may have decreased kidney and liver function; therefore, a low dose should be started and administered cautiously. In case of overdose, severe hypotension or tachycardia may occur, and immediate medical attention should be sought.
