Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

The combination therapy of amlodipine and olmesartan medoxomil is used when blood pressure control is insufficient in patients with essential hypertension. These two drugs lower blood pressure through different mechanisms, dilating blood vessels and suppressing increases in blood pressure, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it helps in effective blood pressure management and contributes to the prevention of complications due to hypertension.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used in patients with allergies to any of its ingredients or similar medications, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe hypotension, heart disease, or severe kidney or liver dysfunction. Patients with low blood volume or salt depletion may experience hypotension; therefore, their condition should be carefully monitored and appropriate measures taken if necessary before starting treatment. Patients with impaired kidney function or kidney transplant recipients should have their electrolyte levels and kidney function tested regularly, and patients with narrowed renal arteries should also be cautious. Patients with liver disease or impaired liver function, as well as those with heart valve disease, also require special caution when using this medication. Since this medication lowers blood pressure, there is a risk of dizziness when driving or operating hazardous machinery. During treatment, the skin may become sensitive to sunlight; therefore, sun exposure should be avoided and appropriate protection should be used if necessary. Caution is advised when taking this medication concurrently with lithium, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and other drugs, as this may increase the risk of side effects. The effects may be enhanced when this medication is used with other antihypertensive agents; thus, it must be taken under the direction of a physician. This medication has not been established as safe and effective for children, so it is not recommended for them. Elderly patients may react more sensitively to this medication, so it is recommended to start with a lower dose and adjust it cautiously. In the event of overdose, severe hypotension and heart rhythm disturbances may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment and possibly treatment to raise blood pressure. This medication should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and heat, and out of reach of children.
