View approved original text

Emergency contraceptives help prevent unwanted pregnancy when taken immediately after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure, ideally within 72 hours. Taking this medication quickly provides a higher preventive effect, so it is important to take it as soon as possible. Emergency contraceptives are used appropriately according to menstrual cycles or contraceptive failure situations to effectively prevent pregnancy. Therefore, they provide peace of mind in the event of unexpected situations.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel orally once. Take as soon as possible after intercourse, preferably within 12 hours, but no later than 72 hours (3 days). If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking, take the same dose again immediately.

Precautions

This medication is a temporary emergency contraceptive and is not suitable for continuous use as a regular contraceptive method. It cannot guarantee prevention of all pregnancies. If menstruation is delayed by more than 5 days, if there is abnormal bleeding during menstruation, or if symptoms suggesting pregnancy appear, it is essential to confirm the pregnancy at a medical facility. Patients with allergies to this medication, severe liver dysfunction, or genetic disorders that prevent digestion of certain sugars should not take this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and if already pregnant, this medication will not terminate the pregnancy. Patients with a history of ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammation should use this medication cautiously, as well as those with serious digestive disorders or heart or kidney diseases. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast tenderness, menstrual delays or bleeding, and fatigue, most of which resolve within 48 hours. Using this medication more than once in a menstrual cycle reduces its effectiveness, and it must be taken within 72 hours after intercourse to be effective. It is recommended not to take this medication after 72 hours. Following use, it is essential to utilize non-hormonal contraceptive methods such as condoms until the next menstrual period begins, as this medication does not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases. Individuals at risk of thrombosis should consult a doctor before taking this medication, and when transitioning to regular contraceptive methods, guidance from a professional is necessary. This medication may reduce effectiveness when taken with certain other drugs, so if currently taking any medications, it is essential to consult a doctor or pharmacist. This medication can also be passed through breast milk, so it is recommended to refrain from breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking it. In the case of overdose, nausea or bleeding may occur, but serious side effects have not been reported, and appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms. When storing, it must be kept in a container that prevents exposure to light, placed in a safe place out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided.
