Emergency contraception effect
This medication is effective for emergency contraception when taken immediately after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure, within 72 hours. It helps prevent unwanted pregnancy and is an important medication for rapid action in urgent situations.
Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg should be taken orally as a single dose. It should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse (preferably within 12 hours), and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking the medication, the same dose should be taken again immediately.
This medication is an emergency contraceptive intended for temporary use to prevent pregnancy. It should not be used as a regular contraceptive method and does not guarantee perfect prevention of pregnancy in all cases. If menstrual periods are delayed by more than 5 days, if abnormal bleeding occurs, or if symptoms of pregnancy are suspected, a pregnancy test must be done. Individuals who are allergic to this medication, pregnant, or possibly pregnant women, patients with severe liver disease, or those with genetic lactose-related problems should not take this medication. Caution is advised for those at risk of ectopic pregnancy or with serious digestive disorders, heart, or kidney disease, as this medication may cause fluid retention in the body and worsen symptoms. Side effects such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast pain, menstrual delays, or bleeding may occur after taking this medication. Most side effects resolve within 48 hours, but rare skin allergic reactions may occur. Also, there is a risk of thromboembolism, so those with a history or family history of thromboembolism should exercise caution. This medication should be taken only once during one menstrual cycle, and if there is uncertainty about the timing of intercourse, efficacy may decrease. After taking this medication, non-hormonal contraceptive methods like condoms should be used until the next menstrual period starts. The effectiveness of this medication ceases after 72 hours following intercourse, so it should not be taken thereafter. This medication does not prevent sexually transmitted infections, and it is advisable to consult a physician before starting general contraceptive methods after taking it. Taking this medication multiple times within one menstrual cycle may elevate hormone levels, potentially causing side effects and menstrual irregularities, so long-term contraceptive methods should be considered. Certain medications, particularly those that induce liver enzymes, may reduce the effectiveness of this medication, so caution is needed if such drugs have been used in the past 4 weeks. Considering non-hormonal emergency contraceptive methods is advisable in such cases. This medication should not be used during pregnancy, and if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be stopped immediately. In those who are breastfeeding, it is recommended to breastfeed before taking the medication and to refrain from breastfeeding for at least 8 hours afterward. No serious side effects have been reported from overdose; however, symptoms like nausea or bleeding may occur, and treatment should be sought accordingly. This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children, and maintaining its original packaging is important for quality preservation.
