This medication is effective against various types of bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Influenza bacillus, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is used to treat respiratory infections such as otitis media, pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and bronchitis. It also helps with urinary tract infections like pyelonephritis, cystitis, and gonococcal urethritis. It is widely used for skin and soft tissue infections including boils, abscesses, folliculitis, soft tissue infections, infectious dermatitis, subcutaneous abscesses, infected wounds, and wound infections. It is used as an effective medication for the treatment of various bacterial infections.
As cephalexin monohydrate, an oral dose of 250mg (potency) is administered every 8 hours. In cases of severe infections (such as pneumonia) and low susceptibility infections, the dose may be doubled. For acute gonococcal urethritis, this drug 3g and probenecid 1g should be administered together as a single dose.

This drug works by binding to specific proteins and disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis, thereby killing bacteria. This drug should not be used in patients who have experienced severe allergic reactions or shocks due to this drug in the past. Patients who are allergic to this drug or to cephalosporin antibiotics should also not be given this. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of allergy to penicillin antibiotics, asthma, skin rashes, hives, or those who are prone to allergic reactions. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, those who have difficulty taking medications orally, the elderly, and those in poor overall health should be monitored closely as vitamin K deficiency symptoms may appear. Patients with a history of gastrointestinal diseases, particularly colitis, should use this drug with caution. This medication can rarely cause severe allergic reactions such as shock, necessitating careful monitoring of symptoms during administration. Severe rashes, blisters, or mucosal damage may occur, indicating dangerous skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome; if any abnormal symptoms appear, the medication should be stopped immediately. Blood abnormalities such as decreased white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells may occur, so regular blood tests are necessary. Hepatic dysfunction or renal dysfunction can also occur rarely, so the state of liver and kidney should be checked periodically. Gastrointestinal effects can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting; especially, if severe colitis occurs, the medication should be stopped immediately. Respiratory side effects such as pneumonia can rarely occur, so consultation with a doctor is advised if respiratory distress or coughing develops. Central nervous system symptoms can include anxiety, agitation, insomnia, dizziness, and hallucinations, albeit rarely. Oral inflammation or fungal infections such as candidiasis may occur. Symptoms of bleeding tendency related to vitamin K deficiency or symptoms of vitamin B deficiency can also appear rarely, so caution is required. To prevent resistant bacteria, this drug should only be used for a minimal period based on sensitivity testing. As with other antibiotics, infections due to resistant bacteria may arise, thus an appropriate therapeutic regimen should be chosen. This drug may interact with specific medications; when used together with probenecid, blood concentration may increase, and the risk of renal impairment may increase when combined with nephrotoxic drugs or diuretics. When administered with anticoagulants, the risk of bleeding may increase, hence coagulation status should be frequently monitored. The contraceptive effectiveness may decrease when used alongside oral contraceptives, so it is advisable to use an additional contraceptive method. When used with specific antibiotics, the efficacy of this drug may decrease; therefore, caution is advised during co-administration. The safety during pregnancy is not certain, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the benefits and risks of this medication. Women who are breastfeeding should also use this drug cautiously, as it may pass into breast milk in small amounts. The safety and efficacy for infants, particularly those under 1 month old, have not been established. In the elderly, adverse reactions may occur more easily due to declining physical functions, so dose and interval should be adjusted cautiously during administration. This drug may affect the results of certain clinical tests, so it should be reported to the healthcare professional during testing.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug may be sensitive to air or moisture; therefore, it should be stored in a tightly sealed container. It is best to maintain a storage temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius at room temperature. Storing it this way can safely preserve the drug's efficacy.
