This medication helps prevent asthma attacks and provides ongoing treatment. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. The 10 mg oral dissolving film should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve without water once daily. This medication is taken once daily, preferably in the evening for asthma patients.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should take 5 mg of montelukast once daily by chewing or placing it on the tongue and allowing it to dissolve without water. For children aged 4 to 5 years, 4 mg should be taken once daily by chewing.

Precautions

This medication may affect the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as agitation, aggressive behavior, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, memory issues, and suicidal thoughts. Therefore, if any new symptoms or behavioral changes occur during treatment, notify your physician immediately. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should avoid taking it. Care should be taken not to exceed the WHO recommended daily intake of aspartame. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with genetic disorders such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. This medication is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, so patients should always carry and use appropriate emergency medication if acute symptoms occur. It should not be used alone to treat exercise-induced bronchospasm; a rescue β-agonist should be taken if necessary. Patients with aspirin hypersensitivity should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while taking this medication. During treatment, do not abruptly stop or switch inhaled or oral corticosteroids without a doctor's guidance. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general symptomatic treatment and clinical monitoring are necessary. During pregnancy, use only if absolutely necessary, and caution is needed while breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children, especially those under 6 months. Elderly patients do not show significant differences in safety, but care should be taken as their response to the medication may vary. During treatment, do not arbitrarily reduce or stop the doses of other asthma medications, and consult with a doctor if symptoms worsen. Lastly, keep this medication out of reach of children and ensure it is not transferred to another container.
